A roof replacement needs careful planning when solar panels are already in place. For this new roof installation in Edgbaston, Birmingham, we renewed the roof covering and the layers beneath it, then reinstalled the homeowner’s existing solar panels over the finished roof.
The project brought together our residential roofing services and solar installation experience, replacing an ageing tiled roof with a fresh dark grey finish while retaining the existing solar array.
Replacing the Ageing Roof
The original roof had weathered tiles, moss growth and areas of damage. Beneath the covering, the old felt and battens also showed deterioration, particularly around the lower roof edges.
These details matter because replacing damaged tiles alone does not address worn materials underneath. On this project, stripping back the roof let us renew the underlay and battens as part of the installation, rather than simply replacing the visible covering.
With scaffolding providing access, we removed the solar panels and stripped away the old roof tiles, battens and underlay, exposing the timber roof structure ready for the next stage.
New Roof Installation in Edgbaston
We fitted new roofing membrane and timber battens before laying the replacement dark grey tiles. The progress photographs show the roof taking shape, from the exposed rafters through to the newly tiled slopes.
The work included fitting the tiles around the existing chimney and roof penetrations, followed by the ridge and verge finishes. These junctions need just as much attention as the main roof slopes, where the rows of tiles create the most visible transformation.
The completed roof gives the property a consistent appearance, with neatly aligned tile courses and matching ridge tiles.
Reinstalling the Existing Solar Panels
Once the new roof covering was in place, we reinstalled the existing solar panels above the tiles. Perimeter mesh was also fitted around the array to help restrict birds’ access to the space beneath.
